PAID ADVERTISEMENT Where Did the Dam Water Go? We're Watching Out On Your Behalf The National Organization to Save Flathead Lake (NOSFL) continues to investigate the facts and find solutions to keep Flathead Lake at 2.893 feet from June 15-September 15. A Step in the Right Direction Energy Keepers, Inc. (EKI), the operators of the Seli's Ksanka Qlispe' Dam in Polson, Montana, recently filed its report to federal regulators and stated in writing: "... during the spring months, we will manage the lake elevations as part of regional flood risk mitigation to manage runoff, meet Article 56 minimum flow objectives, and refill the Lake (near 2,893 feet) for summer recreation." The report also included EKI's latest forecast of inflows and outflows, and it projects the Flathead Lake level will be at 2,893 feet for the entire summer recreation season. Giving Credit Where Credit is Due NOSFL commends EKI and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe (the Dam owner) for adapting the Lake's spring runoff management in anticipation of a likely drought this summer. This action is consistent with NOSFL's Petition to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Previous Dam operators took proactive actions, and for decades managed the Lake at full pool during droughts. Further adjusting flows may be required this summer. We commend EKI for recognizing all stakeholders' interests including the environment, hydroelectric power, agriculture, recreation, fisheries and tourism, and to preserve the economy of Northwest Montana. As an official INTERVENOR, NOSFL will continue to research the facts, offer solutions and keep Energy Keepers accountable for keeping the Lake full at 2,893 from 6/15 - 9/15.
